NACS Trade Show, Chicago - October 12, 2003 - Veeder-Root introduced a new discriminating sensor that can allow fuel retailers to continue to operate if water is the only liquid present in the sump and dispenser pan.

Discriminating sensors (that are hydrocarbon sensing material based) are perceived to be problematic by some regulators. This perception has been the cause of some new local regulations that require fuel retailers to shut down immediately if any liquid is present in the sump or dispenser pan. A common reason for liquid in the sump or pan is water run-off from rain.

The sensor uses proven magnetostrictive technology to accurately detect liquid in the dispenser pan or sump and distinguishes between fuel and water. Depending on local regulations, stations can keep operating if only water is detected in the pan or sump. The new sensor also helps retailers stay in compliance with regulations requiring continuous monitoring of the containment area, alerting them if the sensor is out of position.

Another major benefit of the technology in this sensor is there is very little response time when detecting if fluid is present, and when detecting that the fluid has been removed. This not only alerts the user of a possible issue in the sump or pan but also saves time and money during annual operability tests.

The sensor works with existing Veeder-Root TLS-350 and EMC Series consoles (with minor upgrades) so retailers can further leverage their investment in Veeder-Root tank gauging technology.

"This gives petroleum retailers the peace of mind that they will stay in compliance," said Brian Burnett, Veeder-Root's President, "and reduce downtime by determining if the liquid is fuel or water."

The new Mag Sump Sensor is another key product in Veeder-Root's suite of compliance-oriented products. Veeder-Root offers solutions for compliance management, including those for in tank and line leak detection.
